Plan it like a two day food weekend, not a quick stop. The Indio International Tamale Festival takes over Downtown Indio on December 5 and 6, 2026, and admission is free. So the real work is lining up where everyone sleeps, how you get downtown, and what you do with the hours between tamales.
What Is the Indio International Tamale Festival?
It's a December tradition in Indio, and this year marks the 34th edition. The City of Indio describes it as a weekend of tamales, live entertainment, local vendors and family fun, with thousands of people coming through.
The vendor list is the interesting part. Restaurants and food trucks show up, but so do small, home based and community tamale makers, so some of the best stuff you try might come from a family recipe that's never been on a restaurant menu. Every tamale vendor has to offer at least one tamal priced at $3, so sampling widely won't wreck anyone's budget.

Where Is It Held?
According to the official festival FAQ, the 2026 event fills the streets around City Hall and Center Stage in Downtown Indio, including Miles Avenue, Smurr Street, Towne Street and Civic Center Drive. Festival hours and the entertainment lineup weren't posted when we wrote this, so check the official site the week before you go.
Getting There and Parking From The Brooklyn Penthouse
The Brooklyn Penthouse sits inside Terra Lago, a gated community in Indio a few minutes off the I 10. Our property page lists the Coachella Valley History Museum, which is in the old downtown area, at about 3.5 miles away. That's a short drive.
Here's what most people get wrong about festival parking: they assume they'll find a spot right next to the action. Those streets are the festival. Vendors even have to clear their vehicles out of the footprint before the gates open. The city hasn't published public parking details for 2026 yet, so watch the City of Indio festival page for updates.
A few things that make it easier:
- Take one or two cars, not four. Fewer cars means fewer people circling for a spot.
- Go early on Saturday if you want the shortest lines and the widest vendor selection.
- Back at the house, the driveway holds two vehicles free, and a limited number of street passes cover a third. Overnight street parking isn't allowed otherwise, so sort out cars before you arrive.
Tips for Groups and Families
Twelve people moving as one blob through a crowd? It doesn't work. Pick a meeting spot near Center Stage, then let everyone split up and graze.
Eat Smart, Not All at Once
Buy a dozen or two to share instead of everyone ordering a full plate at the first booth. You'll taste more. And whatever doesn't get eaten comes home, which is where the full kitchen and the outdoor kitchen at the Penthouse earn their keep. Leftover tamales reheated for Sunday breakfast might be the best meal of the trip, honestly.
Bring the Basics
- Cash plus a card, since you won't know every booth's setup
- Layers. December evenings in the desert cool off fast after sunset
- A small cooler bag in the car for anything you buy to take home
Plan Downtime for the Little Ones
Kids burn out on crowds faster than adults admit to. A two or three hour visit, then back to the house, usually beats an all day push. The house has a Pack 'n Play, a high chair and children's dinnerware, so naps and early dinners are simple.
Other Things to Do in Indio That Weekend
The festival covers the days. You'll still have mornings and evenings to fill, and these are all listed on our property page with approximate distances:
- Indio Hills Badlands Trail, about 1.1 miles away, for a cool morning hike before the crowds build downtown
- Terra Lago Golf Club, about half a mile, with 36 holes across the North and South Courses
- Shields Date Garden, about 5.8 miles, an easy add for anyone who wants another local food stop
- Coachella Valley History Museum, about 3.5 miles, right in the older part of town
- Fantasy Springs Resort Casino, about 2 miles, for the adults in the group
If the tamales get everyone in a food mood, our foodie's guide to Indio has more places to eat around the valley.
Why a Private Rental Beats a Hotel for a Festival Weekend
Hotel rooms split a group up. Five rooms on three floors, nobody can find anyone, and the only place to sit together is a lobby. A house keeps everyone under one roof.
The Brooklyn Penthouse sleeps up to 12 across five bedrooms, and each bedroom has direct access to a full bathroom. That matters when everyone's getting ready at once. Grandparents can take the first floor queen suite. Parents with kids can grab the upstairs king suite, which connects to the queen over queen bunk room.
Then there's the stuff a hotel simply can't give you:
- A 40 foot saltwater pool with a slide, plus a hot tub (pool and spa hours are 8 AM to 10 PM, per the HOA and city quiet hours)
- A climate controlled game room with free play arcade games, darts, air hockey and Golden Tee
- A home theater with a 136 inch LED panel screen and eight reclining seats
- An outdoor kitchen with a natural gas BBQ and pizza oven, and a covered patio with a fireplace
Keep in mind the house is for families and friends staying together. Parties aren't allowed, and the guest count tops out at 12. After a full day downtown, most groups just want a quiet dinner and a soak before 10 anyway.
